Listen to Your Body

Today I had a panic attack. At least I think that’s what it was, but they aren’t common for me, so I’m not sure.

I don’t feel ready to divulge the full details of why it happened or what it is that’s making me so anxious recently, but I’ll share my thoughts.

As I was working, this immense tightness filled my chest. My breathing shallowed and quickened, my stomach ached, my mind grew heavy, and I didn’t know what to do. It happened in the middle of a rush, so all I could do was work through the customers and try my best to breathe and not get upset.

I took my long walk as soon as I clocked out. I needed to clear my head. No talking, no music, just the sun, the breeze, and time to think. People say walking can be a huge help, and I’d say that was the case this time. I still don’t know what I’m going to do with the situation that caused this episode, but I believe I know what my body is telling me to do.

That’s what I want this blog to be about – listening to your body. Every part of you works in sync and processes continue to happen behind the scenes no matter what. Evolution has developed our ability to gain insight subconsciously so when something feels off, you need to pay attention.

Whether it’s overtraining in the gym, struggles is relationships, issues at work, poor habits, eventually it catches up to you. If let untreated, the problems grow worse. Some things cannot be pushed down deeper and deeper and be expected to go away. When your body sends you signals that something is wrong, you need to listen.

Some things are easy to alter. Your muscles and joints are in pain – take a rest day. Your job is destroying you mentally – look elsewhere. A friend or significant other is wreaking havoc on your mind – take some space away from them. But sometimes yu may not know exactly what to do. In those instances, you may need to spend some more time considering options. Just don’t ignore or bury the feelings.

This is your life at stake. Stop ignoring your body when it needs your attention. Feel the emotions and sensations and see what they’re trying to tell you. Do what needs to be done to put yourself at ease.
