Finding Flow

Once you find those activities in your life that show you what present state awareness is, you’ll understand how wonderful it is. You’ll chase those activities all the time and do everything you can to be in that state.

Some would call it the Flow State. It’s those times when you’re fully focused on what’s in front of you. Thoughts come and go, but you rarely spend much time on them. Time passes quickly until something reminds you where you are like hunger or a phone call. You feel energized and happy with what you’re working on as though nothing else is going on around you.

It’s a wonderful state to be in and we should all strive to find the pursuits that give us a taste of presence. Today I really honed in on the feeling at the gym. I’ve been exploring new routines and trying to lock down form and mind-muscle connection because I want great results if I’m going to be doing this for 75 Days straight. When I focus fully on the muscle I’m working and the process from stretching to flexing, nothing else runs through my mind. After a few exercises, my 45 minutes is already up and I feel like I just arrived.

Usually this present state comes when I paint or draw. Once I get into it, hours pass by and I think of nothing but what I’m working on. I often reach this point when I write blogs, read, and chat with friends. There are so many opportunities to discover presence, but a lot of the time we don’t know where to look.

You won’t know when it happens until you know what you’re looking for. Now that you’re aware of this present state, you can start to discover your own Flow State activities. Find those things you do that make you feel amazing and pull you away from the constant ambush of your thoughts. If you don’t know of any right now, start exploring.

Call your best friend, go to the gym, take a walk, make art, brew coffee, try anything you’re drawn to and see how it feels. Once you discover the activities that give you the bliss of presence, you’ll never want to experience anything else and you’ll prioritize these moments over distractions.
