Enough Learning

There’s a point in time when you need to stop learning, stop preparing, and start doing. The only way to achieve your goals is to do.

Today I finished a pretty mid book about self-love. The book was definitely intended for a different audience than me, but I stuck with it and read the whole thing. Sure there were some good points, but at this stage in my self-improvement journey, it was all pretty basic information.

This got me thinking about my progress and how far I’ve come. On the one hand, it’s awesome that I found this information obvious because that means I’ve already learned a lot of the lessons. On the other hand, it made me realize that even though I know all this information, I still chose to read the book as if it would teach me something about self-love that would make it easier for me to attain.

If I already have all the tools I need to love myself, why am I reading a book about it? After finishing the book, I realized the only thing I have left to do is do those things. It’s time to stop searching for more information and start acting.

We do this with a lot of habits and goals in our life. We spend so much time preparing to do the thing, but barely any time actually doing the thing. It’s scary starting something new, so we learn as much as we can to put ourself on the right course. But learning can only take you so far. Eventually you have to put the knowledge to work.

It’s beneficial to research before diving head first into something new, but you can’t go on researching and never try what you learned. Once you have a foundation from books, videos, articles, and other people, you have to continue your education by doing, making mistakes, and correcting.

The only way to accomplish anything is to act. No amount of reading will get you where you need to be. Sometimes you have to put the book down and try for yourself. Don’t postpone it anymore, just try.
