Why not have one more obstacle to try stopping me from completing 75 Hard? Maybe this will be the one that gets me…
Once again, I was met with a Unexpected Consequences of changing my routine. In my effort to walk before work, the change in season got me good. If you know me, you’ll know I’m not one to be afraid of the cold. I rarely wear jackets, hats, or gloves throughout the winter, but this time I overestiated my bodies resilience.
You may remember a few days ago, I talked about how I finally got rained on during my morning walk. After 70 days straight of decent weather, I was met with a 40 degree, rainy morning. I didn’t think anything of it as I zipped up my rain jacket and completed the walk, but it lead to me getting sick. For the past three days, I’ve been weak, achey, and have a scratchy throat. It’s been a little rough and it’s the closest I’ve come to calling it quits.
I know how important it is to give your body rest, especially when it’s sick, so forcing myself to eat and also do two workouts a day were a struggle. Every part of me has been telling myself to give up and accept defeat, just to let my body finally recover. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do that.
Under normal circumstances, these past few days would’ve been ample excuse to take it easy. My mindset of rest days is to both schedule them and also only use them when you truly need it. I rarely call out of work unless I have a debilitating migraine. I keep my gym days routine, with one or two days off a week. I eat well 90% of the time. I follow strict routines as much as I can and only stray when it’s necessary.
This is what works for me in my attempt to stay disciplined in my health goals. It may look different for you, but this works for my life. I’m all for giving yourself rest when your body says you need it, especially if you’re locked in the majority of the time.
We all know at this stage in our lives that shit happens. Life isn’t always easy and you can’t expect every day to run perfectly. The best way to work with this is to make your priorities clear, do everything you can to stay consistent, listen to your body, and rest when you need it. The goal is to be good as frequently as possible, so that when the Universe strikes, you won’t feel terrible for taking a step back.
