Did you grow up with a single bowl kitchen sink or a double bowl?
You’re probably asking, “What the hell are you talking about Bryce?”
I’m curious as to how a minor difference can cause one habit versus another. I’ve always had a separator in my kitchen sink – it allows me to fill one bowl with soapy water then place the dishes in the other to rinse. With a single bowl, you can’t do that.
Having a double bowl has led to me not running the water while I wash dishes and I therefore despise when people waste water by running the tap to clean dishes.
But maybe the reason most people run the water while they wash is because that was the best option. If they’ve grown up with a single bowl sink, the easiest/most convenient way to wash is to run the water, scrub the dish, then rinse it off.
Maybe this is a stretch but it got me thinking this morning. It has me pondering how minor tweaks in an environment can alter habits. While I do one thing and then get heated when someone does the same in a seemingly wasteful/counterintuitive way, I can start to consider how their habit arose versus my habit.
Something so minor can cause a person to act or perform a task in a certain way. They grew up doing it that way and felt it was the right way. Someone else learned the opposite.
So the next time you notice a habit in someone else that [sc]rubs you the wrong way or feels “wrong” to you, don’t be so quick to judge. The cause of their habit could be as simple as a division in their kitchen sink.
