If you want a simple mindset trick to hold yourself accountable, motivate you to work, and trigger productive thought patterns, start adding “yet” to the ends of your sentences.
“I don’t know how to do this shit!”, “I can’t handle all these vocab words!”, “There’s no way for me to balance all the things I want to do!”
Have you ever caught yourself saying something similar? I catch myself thinking these things constantly. Whether it be trying to find time after work, trying to learn something new (currently Japanese), or working on my patience and not losing my temper. A lot of the time, it all feels impossible.
From experience, I know I’m capable of adapting to most situations. In the past, I’ve been able to find new ways to do things, balance bizarre schedules, learn weird skills, and I’ve found that most things tend to work themselves out over time.
So when I find myself saying something like “I can’t do this.”, I simply attach “yet” to the end. When the thought switches to “I can’t do this… yet.” you give yourself room to grow. Something as simple as adding a three letter word places more accountability on your choices. Saying “yet” turns the impossible into something achievable.
You can’t figure that thing out right now, but if you’re willing to work at it, one day you will. You don’t understand Japanese kanji now, but with consistent practice, you’ll pick it up. You think you don’t have time for a passion project, but you just haven’t found your flow yet.
You can do anything you desire. You can achieve any goal you set for yourself. Nothing happens immediately. Nothing happens without work. So when the going gets tough and you feel like you can’t continue or your effort isn’t amounting to anything, try changing the thoughts in your head.
Achieving your vision may be as simple as adding “yet” to the end of a sentence.
