Do you ever feel like your content isn’t receiving the attention you had hoped it would? You look at the number of followers on your Instagram and it looks like it hasn’t grown in months. Or you listen to other creators talk about how they’ve grown and you just can’t hear those words coming from your own mouth.
What if we started looking at our social profiles like an investment portfolio? Not on a day by day, month by month basis, but a yearly to multi-yearly basis.
I came across the screenshot I took of my Instagram account on February 25th, 2020. It showed that after two posts, I had a whopping one follower. Now I look at my page coming to the end of 2021 and I have 183 followers.
To many people, that doesn’t seem like a lot of followers. For a while, I would have agreed with that thought. But now I’ve been thinking differently.
Since that first screenshot, my Instagram has grown 18,200%! What other investment do you know that returns that much in just under two years? (If you have something in mind, let me know so I can put money into it). Even if I look at when I hit 100 followers back in November 2020, that’s an 83% increase!
Maybe this is simply another one of my random/crazy “epiphanies” while driving, but I dig the perspective.
When you look at the numbers in a different way, you can realize you’re actually growing pretty quickly. While the number on your profile may not be where you want it, and you may not be gaining a bunch of followers and likes every single day, you are growing.
Much like a long-term investor is satisfied with an average return of 8-10% per year, we should be just as hyped when our content does the same. It’s likely it’ll even outpace those numbers by a ton!
You just have to change your perspective. Day to day doesn’t matter. The year to year is where it’s at.
