There’s a Jim Carrey interview I came across and something he said was fascinating to me. Here’s the original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIqria9jU9A
He brings up the idea of sadness versus depression and how you should think of the word “Depressed” as “Deep Rest”.
He says depression is your body screaming “Fuck you!” to the person you’re pretending to be. Your body needs relief from this character you’ve been playing for too long.
When you feel unfulfilled, spending each day below your potential, going to a job you hate, interacting with scrubs, coming home to sit around and do nothing, you can’t expect to feel good.
You’re doing all these things that don’t motivate you, don’t get you excited, and don’t put your talents to use. Even so, you put a smile on your face and continue the routine.
Your mind and body are tired. You’ve cast yourself in a role you didn’t audition for. You’re using so much energy to be this person when all you really want is to be yourself.
I don’t want to write this and sound like I have the answers. Nor will I claim to deal with depression in my own life. I simply want to put this idea of Deep Rest in front of more people in the hopes that someone who needs it will see it.
How can you give yourself the Deep Rest you need? What hobby can you indulge in to feel your best? Who can you spend time with and be 100% you?
You know I’m here if you need me. I know you can do it, just keep going.
