David Goggins is an absolute machine of a man. Not many people can even come close to what he’s capable of. But you may be able to access a glimpse into the mentality that makes him so unique.
Goggins is unstoppable. What he sets his mind to gets done. There’s no days off, no taking it easy, no simple challenges. It’s all tough and seemingly impossible in a lot of cases. However, he’s able to overcome all the negative self-doubt and accomplish amazing things.
Even after completing Day 2 of 75 Hard, I think I understand what Goggins talks about so much. This mental toughness that hears all the attempts your ego makes to be lazy and does the hard thing anyway.
Sundays are my long and most tiring day of work. Up at 6:30, work from 7:45 till 4, open to close, then barely have time for anything else once I get home. But I can’t give in to my ego’s pressure to take a day off, not when it’s only Day 2. So throughout the day I told myself, “You’re going to the fucking gym and you’re going for a long walk after.” As much as I didn’t want to, I did.
Let me tell you, the feeling I got as I was working out and when I was walking was awesome. It felt so good knowing that despite the circumstances of the day, I did the hard shit and completed another day of the challenge.
If you want to build mental toughness, you have to fight the desire to be lazy. You have to do hard things in order to prove to yourself that you’re capable. No excuses can distract you if you set your mind to accomplishing something.
So do the hard thing today. Find the time, muster up the energy, and get it done.
