I will read pretty much anything and everything. If something catches my interest and I can borrow it or download it, I’ll give it a shot. Sometimes I pick books that are drastically different than how I think, but to me, that’s not a bad thing.
I started reading The Way of the Superior Man recently. I’ve been seeing a lot of videos about it, it peaked my interest, and I found a PDF download online. Some of my friends were a little concerned when I stated I started it and describe the premise.
The book is definitely a little black and white and generalizes things to make a point. The whole idea of the book is to lock in on your masculine energy and how to treat woman with a strong feminine energy. It comes off as kind of manipulative and paints the picture that women tend to act and think the same way.
The point I want to make is that it’s not bad to read books like this. Personally, I think you should read books that share different perspectives than your own. But if you choose to read all kinds of books, you need to be able to acknowledge when the ideas presented are against what you believe and not implement them. Simply because an author was able to publish a book does not mean what they write is the proper way to live.
When I read, I keep an open mind. I do often learn new techniques and gain knowledge from books, but at the same time, some books are there just to strengthen the beliefs I already have. If I don’t agree with what the author says, I’m able to think for myself and reaffirm my own perspectives. I take things at face value and use the information to rethink of how I proceed.
You don’t have to only read things that align with your beliefs. Explore anything that grabs your attention. Read with an open mind and go into it knowing the information isn’t necessarily correct for you. Let everything you read either teach you something new or show you your current thoughts are in a good place.
