I strongly suggest you don’t learn about anything that benefits your life. Don’t bother learning about dieting, exercising, meditation, presence, self awareness, none of it. It’s honestly a terrible idea, because once you start, you can’t turn back.
I finished reading Don’t Believe Everything You Think today and towards the end, the author said something that inspired this blog. They said now that you’ve read through this whole book, you’ve learned the concepts of no thinking, and presence, you can never be the same person you were before.
I’ve thought about this a lot prior to reading this book, but more in relation to diet and exercise. I know people who do not understand calories or how they affect the body. Being someone who did a lot of research long ago on macros and all that shit, I realize how much work it is and how frustrating it can be to have that knowledge in your brain. Same with exercise. Once I started learning about weight lifting, the flood gates opened and there was no turning back.
Now, I find it hard to eat certain things, eat too much, have meals with too little protein, skip the gym, pass on cardio, etc. Once that information is in your brain and you fully understand it, ignoring it is now a choice and when you choose to not follow the guidance, you realize you’re choosing something detrimental.
It’s the same with this book – now that I’ve learned how thinking is the cause of suffering, every time I let myself spiral in thought, I’ll know I’m making the choice to lose out on peace. Now that it’s a clear choice, I can’t be blissfully ignorant.
Does this mean you shouldn’t learn about these things? Not at all, but you have to be readyy to make a huge change. Once you start, you can’t stop – not without knowing you’re making poor choices. Once you learn about calories and macros, you won’t look at food the same way. Once you learn about mindfulness, you won’t be able to get lost in thought without catching yourself and returning to the present. When you discover the better way, ignorance is no longer an excuse, it’s a choice.
So if you’re ready to make that choice and hold yourself accountable, start learning. This is your warning. Are you ready?
