I think people put pressure on themselves to achieve success early because if we don’t, we’ll never do enough to achieve anything.
When it comes to a lot of goals and our vision for success, if we think of them in too long of a time frame, we fail to act today. When we picture something we want to accomplish and realize “Oh, look at all this time I have to achieve it”, it doesn’t force our action. Instead of starting today, we wait until tomorrow.
There needs to be a motivating factor – something that gets you moving. A push to hop on your laptop, pursuing a passion project, doing something to push you towards your goal. But there’s healthy and unhealthy ways of doing so.
The mentality a lot of us have is the need to figure everything out as quickly as possible – our major, career, living situation, and family. Some of us rush into college, pick a career and stick with it for better or worse, start a business and try getting rich overnight. When we do these things, when we rush because we feel we need answers, we create anxiety.
I think when we make these choices, we make them because we feel we need to right away. There’s a hope that this will be the right choice. This decision will make me a stable income, or this will make me happy. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
You can achieve amazing things over the course of a decade and you will. Knowing this can’t stop you from working on yourself now. You just need to take things slower. You do not need to have these things figured out right now, but you do need to work on them. Realizing the power of time as your friend can bring you peace. You have so much time to discover who you are. Time is not there as an excuse for inaction.
You want to be fit and healthy – think of how amazing you’ll look and feel 10 years from now. Realize this, but don’t mistake that as saying you can skip the gym this week.
You’d like to own a business you’re passionate about – imagine all the success you can achieve by the time you’re 30, 40, or 50. That’s awesome, but why aren’t you starting today?
Time is your friend when you’re actually putting in consistent work. When you have a goal in mind and you choose to start today, time is your friend. Time is there to help overcome mistakes and roadblocks. Time is not your friend when you have a goal but continuously push it off. When you choose to stay content, time does nothing but pass you by.
So start. Start small and stay consistent. No more pushing this off. You have so much time to figure it all out. Just start figuring it all out step by step.
