Make a Choice

Give yourself a choice between two positive options. Never make the choice be a negative versus a positive.

My back has been hurting again while I walk. It’s likely in part because I increased the weight of the vest, but I think it’s also just from the fact that I’ve been walking every day. Whatever the case, I still have to do my outside workout every day, so I need to work around it.

Today I had to make a choice. Since my back was sore, even after stretching, I had to choose if I was going to wear the vest or not. But the real choice, the kind that I want to discuss in this blog was this – if I wear the vest, I can walk based on time alone or I can forego the vest and walk further than I normally do.

There was never an option to not walk at all. I either had to walk with weight or walk further. I gave myself two productive options without one being necessarily easier than the other.

This is how any goal should be viewed. You know you should stay consistent and put in effort every day, but sometimes you don’t feel you can put everything you have into it. When those moments come, give yourself a choice. Not doing it is not an option. Neither choice can be easier than the other. Both should require effort and be equally challenging to choose between.

If you want to achieve big things, you have to progress consistently. A great way to do that is to never allow laziness to win by choosing to do nothing. Give yourself reasonable options that both put you a step in the right direction. It shouldn’t be easy. Doing the easy thing doesn’t amount to much. So challenge yourself every day and never let doing nothing be an option.
