What’s something simple that scares you simply because it’s new? It can be something so easy and yet you make every excuse not to do it. Maybe today is the day to try it and prove to yourself that you take things too seriously.
It should come as no surprise that I love coffee shops. I love the vibes of well caffeinated people, free flowing conversations, hard work getting done, books being finished, relaxtion for those that needed a break. I love the sounds of the espresso machine、the coffee grinders, clinking mugs. I love every aspect of them. So why am I afraid to go to one?
Honestly, there’s no clear answer other than because it’s a new experience. There’s a part of me that fears new places because there are so many unknowns. Will there be open tables, what’s the WiFi password, what are the drink sizes, is the coffee good… it’s such simple things, but it keeps me going back to the same places over and over.
I’m literally writteng this blog in my notes section because I’m too nervous to ask for the Wifi. One step at a time!
Before coming to a new shop today, I went through all the excuses trying to talk myself out of it. I cleaned and remodeled my entire apartment this morning just to pass time. As I left the gym, I considered just going to my own place of work because I know it well. But after much deliberation, I came to the new shop.
Of course it’s not a big deal at all. I’m sitting here, I finished reading a book, I’m writing a blog, and I’m experiencing a new environment. Now that I’m here, there’s a sense of relief and pride within me after doing something new. So it makes me wonder what else I’m scared to do that should be no problem at all.
Our brains get so worked up over the littlest things. The flow of thoughts that come before trying something new can be exhausting and enough to prevent action. It’s so easy to talk ourselves out of new experiences. The problem is, new experiences are what we need to keep growing.
To develop yourself, you can’t continue doing the same things you’ve been doing. You need to challenge yourself, try new things, make mistakes, and learn what you’re capable of. It doesn’t take crazy commitments to prove yourself. Sometimes all you need is to go to a new coffee shop.
So consider something you’re not trying simply because it’s new to you. Make an effort to try it out today or this week. Prove to yourself that your excuses are pointless and there’s nothing to fear.
