Sometimes the key to getting through tough times is to slow down. Stop rushing, breathe deeply, and work your way through.
Work has been busy and that’s not something I can change. A lot of the time I grow overwhelmed trying to take everyone’s order and make everything in a timely fashion, but that becomes a challenge. I end up rushing my work and not putting my best effort into what I’m doing or I start being a little rough with my equipment.
Now that I’m starting full-time, I want to ensure I’m forming good relationships with all the customers and making them want to come back. So recently, I’ve been trying to slow down, breathe, and keep a friendly disposition.
Rushing through orders honestly doesn’t save me much time, but slowing down allows me to focus and accurately make everything. When I’m calm and breathing properly, I’m also in a better mood and can let my muscle memory take over and add conversation into the mix. It’s simple things like acknowledging customers, asking them questions, and hopefully raising their mood.
Slowing myself down has been a nice change of pace and I want to keep working at it. I always want to be remembered as a nice guy and people’s favorite barista, so taking my time helps move me closer to that goal.
If you feel stressed and overwhelmed, find yourself rushing and making mistakes, or not completing tasks to the best of your ability, try to slow it down. Remember to breathe, deep into your belly, calm your nerves, and take it one task at a time.
