Take Your Own Advice

Advice isn’t meant for you. Advice is meant for the person giving it.

No one can give you the perfect advice for what you’re going through. While they may have experienced something similar, they have no idea about your unique experience. You are living through your own feelings, emotions, thoughts, and obstacles while they are doing the same.

When someone gives you advice, they can’t say for sure it will help with your situation. The advice they give is based on their own experience and the lessons they’ve learned in their own struggles to overcome obstacles. They can tell you to do this or that because they wish they had done so, but that may not be what’s best for you.

So who should you ask for advice from? You can continue talking to friends, family, and others about what you’re going through and listen to what they have to say, but in the end, you have to trust your gut. Your intuition is your best bet at making move that aligns with your morals and core beliefs. You’ve lived in your mind and body your whole life, so you know how you should proceed in this moment.

If you were to take a moment and have a talk with your future self about your current situation, what would they say? Whatever that first thought was that popped into your head was should be listened to. It may not be the answer you want to hear, but it’s the one you needed. You know something isn’t benefiting you, it may even be harming you, so why do you continue? Why do you stay with that person when you know it’s a poor fit? Why do you drag yourself out of bed each morning for a job you despise?

There’s something in you that keeps you in these negative loops. Somewhere along your journey, you developed beliefs that hinder your progress. You think you’re not good enough, you’re unlovable, you’re a failure, you’re not smart, you were meant to be average, etc. None of these is true. You are capable of anything and you are good enough. You just have to be strong enough to trust yourself.

Consider the negative situation you’re working through right now. Sit and ask yourself “what do I need to do?”. Although the first thought may scare you, it is very likely the best choice for you. Trust yourself and do what needs to be done. It’ll be scary and it will probably be hard, but you will make it through just like you always have.
