Watching the Clock

Do the work without looking at the clock. Be in the moment and get it done.

Day 3 of 75 Hard brought me the idea for today’s blog. One rule of the challenge is two 45 minute workouts a day, one being outside. As I was taking my walk along the canal, I found myself consistantly checking my timer to see how much longer I had. At the halfway point, I turned the timer off, turned around and walked back.

This made me realize the clock doesn’t really make a difference. When I check and still have time to go, I feel dread. So why not just walk, enjoy my surroundings, and let the alarm tell me when my time is up.

I think this can be said for anything you set out to accomplish. When there’s an actual time limit to what you’re doing, focus fully on your objective and let time flow. But with bigger goals like starting a business, losing weight, quitting a bad habit or starting a healthy one, you don’t have a set time.

It’d be nice to know when something would be accomplished, but we don’t have that luxury. So if you’re compelled to do something, you have to be able to enjoy the process and let the outcomes show themselves when they do. There’s no checking the clock to see how close you are and nothing to compare your progress to. All you have is the work you put in right now.

So stop looking for the finish line. Do the work and let time pass. Enjoy as much as possible and look forward to the results you receive from your effort.
